Due to the remote location of Machu Picchu, most visitors travelling the ancient Inca site will choose to spend a night nearby. Other than the exclusive Sanctuary Lodge Hotel located adjacent to Machu Picchu, all of the other tourist hotels are located in the village of Aguas Calientes 30 minutes below Machu Picchu. Although the village is small, there are many hotels and lodgings to choose from. Here is our recommendation of 5 fairly priced hotels near Machu Picchu definitely worth considering.
El Mapi Hotel
Owned by the very successful Peruvian hotel chain Inkaterra, the El Mapi is our top choice for a reasonably priced hotel in Aguas Calientes. Located half way up Avenida Pachacutec, the hotel is ideally located for access to the train station and shuttle busses departing for Machu Picchu. The hotel has 48 modern rooms that are comfortable and stylish, yet simple and fit for purpose. Although the hotel is technically only 3 stars, it is far superior to other 3 and 4 star hotels in the same price range. Onsite facilities include a large bar, outside patio seating, free-internet access and a restaurant. On the down side, rooms have limited views and don’t have a/c as standard. Included within the price is breakfast and dinner. Service at the hotel is notably good. Rooms start from US$ 180 per night.

Casa del Sol Machu Picchu Boutique
Opening its doors for the first time at the beginning of 2013, the Casa del Sol is one of Aguas Calientes newest hotels. It is the most expensive of all the 5 hotels listed here, but we think that it offers value for money in a town where you don’t get much bang for your buck. Situated on the lower train tracks, close to the train station and shuttle bus stop for Machu Picchu, Casa del Sol is located in a rather non-descript looking building. However, once inside its modern, colourful and comfortable lobby will win you over. The quality of the hotel extends to the 30 beautifully fitted rooms, which feature king beds or two oversized twin beds. Facilities include a small spa, bar and restaurant. The price for a night’s stay at Casa del Sol starts from US$ 300, and includes breakfast and dinner.

Situated close to Casa del Sol Hotel on the lower train tracks, Andina Luxury offers probably the highest quality low-priced accommodations in Aguas Calientes. This medium sized hotel excels where other entry level hotels in the same class fail. Rooms are well maintained, ample in size, the beds are comfortable and bathrooms are modern and neatly finished. On the downside the hotel doesn’t offer an onsite restaurant (only breakfast), and the fast flowing Vilcanota River that runs directly behind the hotel can be a little noisy at times. Prices start from around US$ 150 per night, which in our opinion is good value for what you get.

Hatuchay Tower Hotel
Located on the road to Machu Picchu as you leave Aguas Calientes, the Hatuchay Tower Hotel is one of the longer established hotels in the town. Often used by large tour groups, the hotel offers ample sized guest rooms and a handful of suites suitable for double and triple accommodation. Double rooms come with queen beds, whilst twin rooms have 2 oversized single beds. In-room facilities include cable television, heating and air-conditioning. The hotel doesn’t quite have the class of the slightly lower-priced El Mapi hotel, but does maintain a level of quality that foreign visitors are more accustomed with. Other services at the hotel include a bar, a restaurant, a massage parlour and a box lunch service. A night at the Hatuchay Tower starts from US$ 250 and includes breakfast and dinner.

Machu Picchu Santuari Hotel
Not the easiest of hotels to find, the Machu Picchu Santuari Hotel is located a couple of blocks from Avenida Pachacutec, close to the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes. Suitable for budget minded travellers; Santuari Hotel is perfect for serving the purpose of getting a good night’s sleep in between visiting Machu Picchu. A double room starts at US$ 135 per night, which is a bargain in Aguas Calientes. Early bookings are essential as the hotel only has 42 rooms.
